Vipre New Network

Vipre_newnetworkIf you’re one of our customers who has made the anti-virus/Internet protection switch to Vipre, you might have seen the “New Network Found” window like the one shown here.  A number of people have asked why this comes up and why do you have to click on it several times before it goes away.  Here’s our answer:

When Vipre Internet Security (which has its own firewall) was first installed, the “New Network Found” window popped up during the installation because the firewall was seeing your home network for the first time.  There are various layers to the network so the window appeared 2-5 times even when we clicked “Trust Location” each time.  Once the window stopped popping up, you were good to go.

However, some customers have noticed that this window reappears – a day later, a week, a month or more.  Here’s the reason: unless you have a static IP address for your home network (most of us don’t), your Internet Service Provider (e.g., Comcast, AT&T, Time-Warner, RoadRunner, etc.) changes your IP address from time to time.  When this happens, Vipre will ask you again, via the New Network Found window, whether you want to trust the network or mark it “Public.”  If you’re still at home, then you should click “Trust Location” until the window stops appearing.

On the other hand, suppose your computer is a laptop and you want to get online somewhere outside your home – say McDonalds® while traveling.  In cases like this, when the window appears, you should click “Public.”  By doing so, Vipre will treat the network environment differently and question incoming information more deeply than on your home network.  Reminder: we recommend that you do not go to any financial sites when you’re on a public network.
