The proliferation of fake webpages is mind-blowing! Fake pages like the one above seem to be popping up everywhere. Many will warn you to NOT turn off your computer. These messages will attempt to panic you into making the mistake of calling the number listed or clicking on a link.
Customers often ask me, “Why doesn’t my anti-virus block these fake messages?” The answer is simple: there is nothing wrong with the page as far as the coding goes. There are no hidden viruses or malware. There is nothing in the page’s code that would trigger a response from your anti-virus.
Instead, the page simply uses words and pictures in attempt to fool you, to panic you into making a mistake. Remember, if you get one of these fake messages, do NOT click on any links or call the phone number. Instead, call us (772-408-4425) and we’ll help you or use the Task Manager (or Force Quit on a Mac) and shut down the offending browser or hold the computer’s start button in for 10 seconds – shutting the computer off – then wait 5 minutes and restart the computer.
