Secure Wi-Fi?

People often call or log into Remote Technical Support (https://www.4kcc.com/rts) asking for help with connecting to a Wi-Fi network. If you look at the picture above, you’ll see the Wi-Fi networks that are in our shop. At the very top, where you see the icon that looks like a monitor with a cord, that’s an Ethernet connection (Ethernet cord between the computer and the modem) and has nothing to do with Wi-Fi.

If you look at all the Wi-Fi networks available, you’ll notice that the one at the bottom (xfinitywifi) has a caution symbol with an ! inside. This tells you that network has no security on it. Were you to hop onto that network, anyone nearby, with the proper knowledge and/or software, might be able to see everything you do on your computer. You would never do banking or anything financial when connected to a Wi-Fi that wasn’t secure – unless you are using a VPN. (That’s another blog post!)

For the record, all those Wi-Fi networks listed above that do not have the warning symbol are secure and would require you to know their password before you could connect.
