The Problem

When attempting to print from a Windows 10 machine to a Kyocera printer, the computer suffers a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) shutdown.

The Cause

On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, Microsoft issued update KB5000802. Shortly after, it was discovered that if a Windows 10 machine had updated with the KB5000802 and then tried to print to a Kyocera printer, the computer would crash. After learning of the problem, Microsoft pulled the update from auto updates and encouraged people to remove the update until the conflict was resolved and a new update pushed out.

The Workaround

For those using Windows 10 and printing to a Kycoera printer, the temporary fix is to remove the KB5000802 update. Here is the procedure:

  • In the Windows 10 search field, type cmd.
  • When Command Prompt appears at the top of the search results, right-click and choose “Run as administrator.”
  • After the Command Prompt window appears, type the following: wusa /uninstall /kb:5000802 (Note: you must type or copy and paste the command exactly as it is written – including spaces.)
  • If the KB5000802 is found, Windows 10 will ask you to confirm that you want to remove it.
  • The removal procedure may take some time but once finished, a pop-up will prompt you to restart the computer. You should do that immediately.
  • If the update was removed properly, you should now be able to print to the Kyocera printer.

Please note that the update will not automatically reinstall because, as mentioned above, Microsoft has removed the update from auto updates.
