The Problem

One of our customers logged into Remote Technical Support with a Windows 10 problem. The issue: even though Google Chrome was their default browser, every time they brought their computer out of sleep, Microsoft Edge opened. They found this very annoying!

What They Tried

Our customer tried changing Power Settings, including Advanced Settings, but nothing worked. They reset Google Chrome as their default browser but the issue continued. No matter what they tried, Microsoft Edge still opened when they brought the computer out of sleep.

The Solution To “Microsoft Edge Opens After Sleep”

If you search for this issue, you’ll find lots of so-called solutions. We found only one that works for sure. It involves the Windows 10 Registry thus I have to share some caution statements.

Registry Mistakes – If you make a mistake while editing the Registry, you may crash your entire computer. If you don’t know how to safely use the Registry, find someone who does (like 4KCC).
Registry Backup – Before you make any changes to the Registry, you should create a backup copy. Don’t know how to do that? Check out this Microsoft article: How to back up and restore the registry in Windows (microsoft.com)

Now that you’ve been warned, here’s the Registry hack to fix the issue where Microsoft Edge opens after sleep:

  1. Navigate to THIS area of the Registry.
  2. Change the Registry Key from 1 to 0.
  3. Close the Registry.
  4. Reboot your computer.

What To Do If The Issue Remains

If you have properly changed the Registry Key and the issue remains, contact us.
