Yesterday, users found that Microsoft Outlook 365 erases text when return/enter Is hit. The issue appeared after Microsoft released an update for Outlook 365 – update version 2104 build 13929.20372. There’s nothing unusual about them pushing out an update; however, two problems occurred after this particular update: 1) When reading some emails, only the very top portion of the email would be visible – in some cases, just the very top line. 2) When composing an email, whatever was typed would disappear when the user hit the Enter/Return key. (See example above.) The problem is world-wide and notices appeared on many websites including The Register.

Microsoft To The Rescue

After becoming aware of the update issues, Microsoft released a fix and is pushing the fix out to Outlook 365 users. If you are one of those users, you should receive the update by the end of the day, today. You will need to shut down Outlook and restart so that the fix can take effect. If you want to check to make sure you don’t have the version of Outlook with the errors (2104 build 13929.20372), here’s how to do that:

  • In Outlook, click or tap the FILE menu,
  • Open OFFICE ACCOUNT.
  • On the right side of the window, find ABOUT OUTLOOK. The version will be listed there.

False Thinking

Unfortunately, when an update causes an issue like this one, I often hear “This is why I don’t do updates!” As I explained in a post I wrote last year (“Updates“), hackers take advantage of unfixed operating system (OS) and app security flaws. With this in mind, it’s important to perform updates even though there is an occasional problem.
