November Seminar 11-19-2022

Time for review of our seminar 09-11-2021

Our November Seminar!

This Seminar was titled, “Three Of The Most Important Minutes In US History.” I derived that from the fact that President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. His speech was all of 272 words and took less than three minutes to present. To paraphrase President Franklin Roosevelt, “Those words will live in infamy.” I tried to give away Anything Goes tickets to anyone who guessed how I came up with the title but, unfortunately, no one got it right! 😂 When I saw that, I took everyone into a dark place – my thinking process. I explained how I often come up with seminar names. I usually go to a site that shows me what happened on the same date as the seminar. Then, I use something from the date to come up with the title. After allowing everyone into my mind, I gave the title for December’s seminar – I Dwell In Possibility. I also hinted that this title has something to do with December 10th and that it involves a woman. We’ll see who can figure out how I came up with December’s title!

For those of you who were able to attend, it was awesome to see you! Whether you attended or not, you’ll find all the details about the seminar on this page. (I hope you’ll be able to attend our December 10th seminar – the more the merrier!)

On this page, I’ll review what we went over. Please don’t hesitate to email me with any questions.

Seminar Quiz

We started the seminar with a 10-question quiz (plus a bonus question). Rather than list the questions and answers here, you can find them inside the PDF version of the PowerPoint Presentation I used. (See Resources below.)

Fake But Good

Although the quiz included a fake email, I showed two more scam emails just to drive home the point!

Mi-Fi

This is a section of training I’ve been trying to get to since our September seminar. I was determined to get this in for the November seminar.

Mi-Fi is a portable device that allows you to connect to and share the Internet by connecting to a cell tower. I demonstrated the AT&T device I use. Here are two pictures of it:

The picture on the left above shows the top of the unit. The picture on the right shows the ports where you can plug in an Ethernet cord, a USB-A cord, and the USB-C cord for charging. Besides connecting with an Ethernet cord, you can connect up to 10 devices via Wi-Fi. The cost of these types of devices varies but they all require data plans with your mobile carrier.

I mentioned that if you have a smartphone, you have Mi-Fi. On the phones, it’s called a Hot Spot. This option is usually off by default. The Internet is slower and doesn’t have all the control features that a separate Mi-Fi device has but it’s good if you’re in a pinch and need the Internet.

Magniber Ransomware

We talked again about the Magniber Ransomware. This software targets regular computer users like you and me rather than huge companies or governments. If your computer gets infected with this ransomware, all of your data files will be encrypted. The scammers will demand money to give you the encryption key to unlock your files. As the FBI says, never pay the money. Often, when people do pay the ransom, the files remain encrypted and unusable even after the key is applied. For this reason and many other reasons, you need online backup! I use and recommend Carbonite. If you don’t have that now, please consider getting it today. Just purchase HERE.

Microsoft PowerToys

The final subject I covered was Microsoft PowerToys. I love this software. Here are some of the things it allows you to do on your Windows computer. (Apologies to my Mac customers and readers.)

  • Always On Top – This allows you to pin a window that stays on top of everything else. This is especially helpful when you want to use the calculator and fill in amounts in another window.
  • Color Picker – One of my favorite toys. Use the picker to get the information of a color so you can match it to something else.
  • Image Resizer – A valuable tool that comes in handy when you want to email a picture to someone. This toy appears in the right-click menu and easily resizes a photo.
  • Mouse Utilities – Ever have problems finding your mouse on the screen? This toy allows you to easily find it.
  • Screen Ruler – Need to measure pixels on your screen? This is the toy for you.

This is a fun program that can save you time and help you perform procedures more quickly. The really great thing about this app is that it has clear instructions for each of the toys built right into the app.

At the seminar, I showed a bit of a complicated method for getting PowerToys. However, the fastest way is to go to the Microsoft Store on your computer and search for Microsoft PowerToys. Download it and start having fun!

The 4KCC YouTube Channel

YouTube Channel

Several times during the seminar, I referred to my YouTube Channel.

For the record, I moved to creating videos since I often get asked the same questions multiple times by different people. My video selection varies and covers computers, tablets, smartphones, printers, and more. I strongly urge you to subscribe to my channel, if you haven’t already. Also, if you can “Like” my videos and leave comments, that really helps with my Google Search results. Instead of emailing me a nice comment, I respectfully ask that you comment under the video instead.

You do need to know this: you can only “Like,” “Subscribe” or comment if you have a Google account. (By the way, a Gmail account and a Google account are the same.) If you have an Android device, you already have a Gmail account, even if you aren’t using it. If you’d like to help me on YouTube and don’t have a Gmail account, it’s easy to sign up and it’s free! You can just get started HERE.

If you’re not sure how to subscribe, I have a video that explains the process! You’ll find it here:

Anything Goes

Anything Goes is coming to Port Saint Lucie High School where Joyce is the Music Director. We gave two tickets away at the end of this seminar.) Tickets are on sale now. The show will run during the last week of January 2023 and the first week of February 2023. Get all the information about the show HERE.

Our Next Seminar

Our next seminar will be Saturday, December 10, 2022. You can get all the seminar information by visiting our seminar page: https://www.4kcc.com/seminars. We hope to see you then!
