“The Cloud” – What Is It?

Blue sky, big puffy clouds

When you open your computing device’s browser and go to any website – let’s say https://www.4kcc.com, for instance – the webpage which appears is stored on a server on the Internet. A server, by the way, is just a computer. It works a little differently and it’s a bit more complicated than the computers you use, but that’s all it really is.

“The Cloud” is just a server (actually multiple servers) which is connected to the Internet and don’t reside in your home or office. We think of Internet servers as being “up there” or “in the clouds” because we can’t physically touch them and we have to go through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to get to them. If the Internet or your connection to the Internet goes down, you can’t reach webpages and and the servers which store them.

Cloud computing is the same as going to a webpage except that you’re doing more than just accessing webpages. In our next blog post, we’ll begin to explore some of the common uses of cloud computing.
