Address Change

A question that we’re asked frequently is: “How do I change my email address?” There are many reasons you might want to change your email address. For example, you might be changing ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and you’ll be losing your address with the original company; you might be unhappy with changes your current email service has made; or, you are receiving a ton of junk email and you just want to get a fresh start. Whatever your reason, here are our suggestions on how to make it happen.

  • Create your new email address with a new email provider.
  • From your old email address (not the new address), send an email to those people in your address book with whom you’d like to share your new address.
    • Make sure you use the BCC: (Blind Carbon Copy) field if you are sending the email to people who don’t know each other.
    • This is a great time to clean out your address book (contacts) and eliminate: those who have died; duplicate entries; those with whom you are no longer in contact.
    • Please note that you cannot send an address change email to subscription email lists. For instance, if you get emails from a store, say Macy’s, you must use their method of changing email addresses. This is usually found at the bottom of every email they send you. If you include them in a general email informing people of your address change, nothing will happen.
  • Keep your old account open for at least 30 days. After you’ve notified everyone, if they keep sending to your old address, reply and remind them of your new address.

What should you say in your notification email? Here’s an example (template) which you can use and modify to fit your needs:

Change of Address

Hi!

I wanted you to know that I have a new email address: [email protected]. Please update your address book with my new email. I’ve already started to use the new address and, soon, I’ll be deleting my old one.

So that I can be sure you’ve received this notification of the address change, would you be kind enough to take a moment and reply?

Thanks!

(Your name)

You can send one email to as many as 50 people but remember to put everyone’s address in the BCC: line. To read all about BCC: – why you should use it and how to use it – click HERE.
