A Real HUMdinger

Violet sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus), adult male, in flight. Monteverde National Park, Costa Rica.

Do you ever have a melody in your head that you just can’t remember its name or the words? Thursday, Google announced a new search feature. You can now hum a tune and Google search will return the most likely song. You don’t even have to be all that good at humming! You do, however, have to be able to hum about 10-15 seconds of the melody.

How do you use it? Here’s how:

DeviceProcedure
Smartphone
(iPhone or Android)
1) Open the Google App
2) Click on the microphone
3) Say “What’s this song?”
4) Hum your melody
5) View the results
Google Search
Any browser
where you go to google.com
1) Click on the search microphone
2) Say “What’s this song?”
3) Hum your melody
4) View the results
Google Assistant1) Say “Hey, Google. What’s this song?”
2) Hum your melody
3) View the results

Just a FYI: I tried humming “Happy Birthday” and it failed to return any results. I tried it again, only this time I hummed a little slower and Google Search returned Happy Birthday To You suggestions. So, if you try it and it doesn’t work the first time, hum more slowly or hum more of the melody.

Go ahead, try it – I won’t judge your humming abilities! 🤣
