Today, I’m announcing two new services here at Keystone Computer Concepts. In truth, they’re not all that new since we’ve been doing them for some time. It’s just that most people don’t know we offer them. Let me tell you about both.

Proofing and Editing

Proofing and editing is a service we’ve been doing for a few organizations/companies. Now, we’re offering it to any company or group that wants great proofing and/or editing. Our rates are very competitive and we’ll quote before we start.

You might wonder why proofing and editing is important. In today’s world, it seems things like spelling and correct information don’t count. But, they do. If you went miles out of your way and missed a special event because the flyer given to you had the wrong address on it, you wouldn’t be too happy. When things like this happen, people get frustrated and those producing the error can look less than professional.

What is the difference between proofing and editing? Let me explain how we look at these two services.

Proofing

When we proof, we look for things like typos, misspelled words, wrong phone numbers, and wrong addresses. For instance, we just saw a group create and circulate a poster for their Christmas event and it had the wrong phone number to call for tickets. Had we proofed that poster for them before hundreds of copies were printed, they would have avoided all the issues needed to fix it.

Editing

Editing goes beyond proofing. Here we look for grammatical errors such as tense consistency. We also look for mistakes such as wrong font sizes, misuse of quotes, and more. Additionally, we fact-check the article we’re editing, as needed. Here’s an example of how fact-checking would have been helpful: I just saw an article about the movie, “Love Actually.” The article says it was updated on November 16, 2023. However, under the section on the page entitled “Is Love Actually On Cable?” it lists dates from 2022, not 2023. (See the page HERE.)

When it comes to editing, we are very careful to not lose the author’s “voice.” I, being from Pennsylvania, tend to write in a particular fashion and I wouldn’t want my “style” to be changed without my permission. (Note: this is one of the downsides to having A.I. write articles. The computer-generated message rarely sounds like the person who supposedly wrote it. You might see the section of a previous post entitled But What About My “Voice?” which you’ll find HERE.)
