Disk Cleanup

In my post from last week, Celebrate National Clean Out Your Computer Week, I gave you a couple of ways to clean up your computer – removing duplicate files and deleting old files you haven’t used in years.

In this post, I want to add another way of getting back hard drive space and possibly speeding up your computer. For Windows 10 users, that would be the built-in app, Disk Cleanup. I’ve created a video and I encourage you to watch it if you haven’t seen it already.

If you’re a Mac user, I haven’t created a video for you but you also have a built-in procedure to clean up files. Here’s how:

  1. Click on the apple in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.
  2. Choose “About this Mac.”
  3. On the window which appears, click on the Storage tab.
  4. Next, click on Manage.
  5. After you give the new window time to search and load, you will see recommendations such as “Store in iCloud,” “Optimize Storage” and “Empty Trash Automatically.” Explore each of these and you’ll discover simple ways to free up space and reduce clutter!

So if I use the disk cleanup tool in windows 10 as you show in your video, then I don’t have to do the cleanup you described in the prior blog? Thanks, Bro!

    1. Sis…No, this cleanup does not eliminate duplicate files and/or files that you no longer need. Once you do that work and put those files in the Recycle Bin, the Disk Cleanup app will empty it (if you check it).
